PORTALS
Several years ago I tried, and failed, to create an animated short called PORTAL HELL. It was about how these magical doorways worked, and all of the different ways they could be used. Here are the bits and pieces that never got finished.
One of the goals of the project was to show how everyday people used the portals. Here you can see doorways which opened miles above the city, people wearing portals, and never ending vending machines.
Here are two different animatics I made to open the short.
The main focus of the project was to explore the theoretical logic of how the portals worked. Everything from weight distribution, the conservation of momentum, and portals passing through other portals was to be explored.
Similar to time travel, portals are an entirely make believe mechanism, but are fascinating in that there is an inherent logic to how they might work. There was a period of time in which i was utterly obsessed with figuring out all these “right answers” to their mechanics. How they might be created wasn’t important to me, but how they might work kept me up at night. I eventually realized that since these are, in the end, devices of pure fiction, a lot of their rules were frustratingly up to me.
Ultimately the project was abandoned.
